Free, open-source software for visualizing and analyzing molecular structures in 3D.

Jmol is a free and open source 3D viewer app and 3D editor developed by Egon Willighagen for Windows, it's portable and straightforward.

The download has been tested by an editor here on a PC and a list of features has been compiled; see below. We've also created some screenshots of Jmol to illustrate the user interface and show the overall usage and features of this 3D viewing program.

Molecule viewer for chemistry, biochemistry, physics and materials science

Jmol is a Java based application and an applet for displaying 3D chemical information. Jmol is a molecule viewer for students, educators, and researchers in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and materials science.

Features include reading a variety of file types, including PyMOL session files and output from quantum chemistry programs, file writing (including JPG, PNG, PNGJ (PNG ZIP), and ZIP formats), and animation of multi-frame files and computed normal modes from quantum programs, surfaces, translucency and more.

Features of Jmol

  • 3D printing: Prepare and print 3D models of molecules.
  • Animations: Generate and control animations of molecules.
  • Chemistry: Visualize and analyze molecular structure and properties.
  • Customization: Customize the program interface and settings.
  • Data import: Load molecular data from files or databases.
  • File export: Export images and animations in multiple formats.
  • High performance: Optimized for speed and efficiency.
  • Measurements: Measure distances and angles between atoms.
  • Rendering: Render images with realistic shadows and reflections.
  • Scripting: Create and execute scripts in Jmol to automate and customize operations.
  • Visualization: View molecules from multiple perspectives.

Compatibility and License

Jmol is available for free and released under the open source GPLv2 license on Windows from 3D design. The license provides the options to freely download, install, run and share this program without any restrictions. The source code for Jmol should be freely available and modifications are certainly permitted as well as the option to inspect the software.

What version of Windows can Jmol run on?

Jmol can be used on a computer running Windows 11 or Windows 10. Previous versions of the OS shouldn't be a problem with Windows 8 and Windows 7 having been tested. It comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit downloads.

Other operating systems: The latest Jmol version from 2024 is also available for Mac.
